Weekly #4- Math is a Language: Nature of Mathematics



The role of our number system
There are four characteristics of our number system: role of zero, additive property, a base of ten, and place value. Our number system consists of the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. Each digit along with the characteristics of our number system can be manipulated to represent a number within our number system.
These ten digits originates from the nine Hindi numerals: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. These digits along with 0, which is called "Zephirum", are all used to write any number.
What do we mean when we say math is a language? Well lets start off by understanding the meaning of a language. Language is "is the human capacity for acquiring and using complex systems of communication." From this we can conclude that our number system is a language. Our number system is called a base ten system and is a language for describing quantities and the relationships between quantities. Within our number system we interpret information, make decisions, and problem solve.
